Scope Bloat: Appliacnes

Chronicling my adventures restoring and updating a quirky old Philadelphia rowhouse

Scope Bloat: Appliacnes

This wasn’t part of the plan, but the dishwasher decided to turn itself into a dish rack in the middle of this project. And giving it a bit of thought, we decided that while we’re at it all the appliances should be stainless steel. As proud as I was of buying the opposite of what normies want, we might not stay in this house forever and this seems like the kind of upgrade we’d actually get back. Plus,we got the oven scratch and dent and the other ones used.

Now, small house with no yard where you can walk to everything sounds like an easy life, but a lot of the time it isn’t. So we bought our stove, signed the contract that the sale was final, and then realized that without the controls on top, they make them stick out a little extra at the front, so it wouldn’t fit through our 27 3/4″ front door opening. Yes, that’s it, even with the door off! Of course I thought of doom for a bit. And by doom I mean wasting money But there’s an alternative! DIY gas fitting connections! In this condition it got through the door.

And here it is installed! And so far so good, the used appliances work, so the seller wasn’t a crook, and the DIY assembled gas stove hasn’t blown up the block. (Yet?) The oven plays little songs to tell us different things, which is weird but I guess it will be useful once we learn what they mean.

I think doing without the high back makes the small room look a lot bigger. And also, we’re putting a pretty backsplash in next. We hired a plumber to do this job. Even though we had to do our own mini-gas pipe connections ourselves to get it into the house anyway. But also because the plumber who installed the line up from the basement put it where it was in the way and the old stove was like 2 inches out from the wall all this time. I just ignored it, but it sure is nice to have this one back where it belongs.

But now the dishwasher is out from where it belongs. I’m hoping that I can un-catch it from whatever it’s caught on and install it flush with the cabinets, but at least we have a working dishwasher for now. Also, see that chip missing from the sink cabinet? Groan. But I knew I was going to need to repaint the base cabinets anyway. We do have the piece that broke off.

And while the plumber was here…

Tito’s excited to be done with brushing his teeth in the bathtub. I preferred the kitchen sink.

The sinks and plumbing fittings were wedding gifts, so we’ve had them stored in the basement for 2 years while we waited for the motivation to take this on. And we finally did when we were living and working here, so being without a bathroom sink was as disruptive as possible. Oh well!

    Looks nice!

And ouch, that chip in the cabinet had to have been emotionally painful. I’m sure it will glue in and patch up fine, though 🙂
